Background

The university was set up by an Act of the Punjab Legislature, the Punjabi University Act, 1961, and formally came into being on 30 April 1962. It was inaugurated in Patiala, the former princely capital, on a campus that was developed over subsequent years on the outskirts of the city. The Maharaja of Patiala, Yadavindra Singh, played a notable role in the early establishment of the university, and the institution received support from the Government of Punjab as part of efforts to consolidate higher education in the region following the reorganisation of the state.

Although the founding mandate emphasised the study, propagation, and enrichment of the Punjabi language and Punjabi literature, the university's charter also permitted the development of teaching and research in other disciplines. As a result, departments in the natural sciences, social sciences, technology, and professional fields were progressively added.

Academic structure

The university is organised into multiple faculties, with teaching and research departments grouped under broad areas such as:

A large number of colleges in the Patiala region and adjoining districts are affiliated to Punjabi University for undergraduate and selected postgraduate programmes.

Research and publications

Punjabi University has been particularly active in lexicography, linguistic research, and publishing related to Punjabi language and Sikh studies. Long-running projects have included Punjabi-English and English-Punjabi dictionaries, encyclopaedias of Sikhism and Punjabi literature, and editions and translations of classical and medieval texts. The Publication Bureau of the university has produced a substantial catalogue of academic books, reference works, and journals in Punjabi and English.

Specialised centres at the university focus on areas such as Sikh studies, Guru Granth Sahib studies, Patiala and East Punjab States Union (PEPSU) history, diaspora studies, and advanced research in physics, chemistry, and computer science.

Campus

The main campus is situated in Patiala and houses the central administration, most teaching departments, the university library, hostels, sports facilities, and an auditorium. The Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha Library serves as the principal library, holding extensive collections in Punjabi, Sikh studies, and general academic disciplines. The campus also includes laboratories, a health centre, and facilities for cultural and sporting activities.
