Overview

Punjab Roadways operates a fleet of buses connecting district headquarters, towns and villages across Punjab. Its network extends to neighbouring states including Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, with services radiating from major bus terminals at Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Patiala, Bathinda and Chandigarh.

It is administered through a network of regional depots, each headed by a General Manager, and operates alongside the PEPSU Road Transport Corporation (PRTC), which is a separate state undertaking serving similar routes in parts of Punjab.

Background

Public bus transport in Punjab traces its institutional roots to the period after the reorganisation of the state. State-run road transport was developed to provide affordable mobility, especially in rural areas where private operators were limited. Over the decades, Punjab Roadways grew into one of the larger state transport organisations in northern India, structured around district-based depots feeding into a hub-and-spoke network of bus stands.

Operations

The service operates ordinary, express and long-distance categories of buses. Tickets are typically issued at bus terminals or on board, and concessional travel is provided to categories such as students, senior citizens, freedom fighters and persons with disabilities under welfare schemes notified by the Government of Punjab.

  • Intra-district and inter-district services within Punjab.
  • Inter-state services to adjoining states in northern India.
  • Operations from major Inter-State Bus Terminals (ISBTs) and town bus stands.
  • Coordination with PRTC on overlapping routes.

Administration

Punjab Roadways is supervised by the Department of Transport of the Government of Punjab, with policy direction from the Transport Minister and the Transport Secretary. Field operations are managed through depot-level offices distributed across the districts of the state.

Significance

As a state-owned carrier, Punjab Roadways plays a key role in providing low-cost mobility, supporting rural connectivity, and enabling access to education, healthcare and employment. It complements the rail network operated by Indian Railways in the region and remains a primary option for daily commuters in towns and villages not directly served by trains.
