Geography

Punalur lies in the eastern interior of Kollam district, where the lowlands of southern Kerala meet the forested slopes of the Western Ghats. The Kallada River, one of the major rivers of southern Kerala, flows through the town. The surrounding terrain is characterised by rubber plantations, mixed forests, and small hills, with the Thenmala reservoir and forest area situated to the east. The town is connected by road to Kollam to the west, Thiruvananthapuram to the south, and Shenkottai in Tamil Nadu to the east through the Punalur–Shenkottai route across the Ghats.

Punalur Suspension Bridge

One of the best-known landmarks of the town is the Punalur Suspension Bridge across the Kallada River. Built during the 19th century in the period of the Travancore kingdom, it is regarded as one of the earliest suspension bridges constructed in India and remains a heritage structure associated with the town's identity. The bridge was originally engineered to allow movement of people and goods between the timber-rich eastern hills and the markets to the west, while preventing wild animals from crossing into the town.

Economy

Historically, Punalur grew as a centre of the timber and forest produce trade due to its location at the edge of the Western Ghats. The town was for several decades known for the Punalur Paper Mills, which was one of the older paper manufacturing units in Kerala and a significant local employer; the mill subsequently went through periods of closure and revival. Other economic activities include rubber processing, small-scale industry, retail trade, and agriculture in the surrounding panchayats, with rubber, tapioca, coconut, and spices being important crops.

Transport

Punalur is an important junction on the Kollam–Sengottai railway line, which connects the Kerala coast with Tamil Nadu through the Western Ghats. Punalur railway station is one of the major stops on this route. By road, the town lies on State Highway connections linking Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, and Shenkottai. The nearest airport is Trivandrum International Airport, with Kollam as the nearest port and major coastal city.

Administration

The town is administered by the Punalur Municipality, a local self-government body under the Kerala Municipality Act. It is part of the Punalur Assembly constituency, which sends a member to the Kerala Legislative Assembly, and falls within the Mavelikkara Lok Sabha constituency for parliamentary elections.

Education and institutions

Punalur has a number of government and aided schools, higher secondary schools, and arts and science colleges affiliated to the University of Kerala. Government offices, a sub-district hospital, and various banks and cooperative institutions serve the town and its hinterland.

Culture

The cultural life of Punalur reflects the broader traditions of southern Kerala, with Malayalam as the dominant language and a population that includes Hindu, Christian, and Muslim communities. Local festivals at temples, churches, and mosques, along with annual events linked to the Kallada River and the suspension bridge area, form part of the town's social calendar.
