Overview
PRTC functions under the Transport Department of the Government of Puducherry. It provides scheduled bus services from the four geographically separated districts of the Union Territory — Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahé and Yanam — although the bulk of its operations are concentrated in and around the Puducherry region. The corporation runs town services within Puducherry city as well as mofussil and long-distance services.
Background
Puducherry, formerly the French establishments in India, became a Union Territory of the Indian Union after the de jure transfer of 1962. Public road transport in the territory has historically been provided by the territorial government, with PRTC emerging as the dedicated corporation responsible for passenger bus operations. It complements services run by neighbouring state transport undertakings such as the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) and the State Express Transport Corporation (SETC), which also serve Puducherry.
Operations
The corporation's services include:
- City and town services within Puducherry.
- Mofussil services connecting Puducherry with rural areas and surrounding districts in Tamil Nadu such as Villupuram and Cuddalore.
- Inter-state services to major cities including Chennai, Bengaluru, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai and Tirupati.
- Services originating from the Karaikal region, which lies within the Cauvery delta in Tamil Nadu.
The principal terminus in Puducherry city is the bus stand located in the central area of the town, which serves both PRTC and other state transport buses.
Significance
As the only state-run bus operator headquartered in the Union Territory, PRTC plays a key role in providing affordable public transport, including concessional travel for students, senior citizens and other eligible categories under schemes notified by the Government of Puducherry. It also facilitates connectivity between the territory's geographically discontinuous districts and the Indian mainland transport network.
