Background

Panchal was born and raised in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He came up through the state's age-group system and was identified early as a technically organised top-order batsman suited to the longer format. He progressed through Gujarat's under-19 and under-22 sides before earning a senior call-up.

Domestic career

Early years

Panchal made his first-class debut for Gujarat in the 2008–09 Ranji Trophy season. In the early phase of his career he established himself as a dependable opener, accumulating runs steadily across seasons in the Plate and Group divisions of the competition.

Breakthrough seasons

Panchal had a standout 2016–17 Ranji Trophy season, finishing as the tournament's leading run-scorer. He scored more than 1,300 runs in the season, including multiple centuries and a double hundred, and played a central role as Gujarat won their maiden Ranji Trophy title that year, defeating Mumbai in the final at the Holkar Stadium, Indore. The campaign placed him among the most consistent opening batsmen in Indian domestic cricket.

Captaincy

He went on to lead Gujarat in subsequent seasons across the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Under his captaincy, Gujarat continued to be a competitive side in the Elite group of domestic cricket.

India A and national selection

Panchal was a regular feature in India A squads, touring with the side to countries including South Africa and the West Indies. In 2021, ahead of India's Test tour of South Africa, he was named in the senior Indian Test squad as a reserve opener following injuries to first-choice players. Although he did not make his Test debut on that tour, the call-up reflected his standing as one of the most reliable red-ball openers in the country.

Indian Premier League

Panchal has been associated with Indian Premier League franchises during the auctions, though his primary impact in professional cricket has been in the first-class format rather than in T20 leagues.

Playing style

Panchal is regarded as a classical opening batsman who relies on a tight defensive technique, judgement of line outside the off stump, and the ability to occupy the crease for long periods. He is particularly noted for his performances on seam-friendly Indian pitches in the early hours of a Ranji Trophy match.

Significance

Within Gujarat cricket, Panchal is considered one of the architects of the state's most successful red-ball era, alongside players such as Parthiv Patel and Jasprit Bumrah. His prolific run-scoring in the late 2010s drew attention to the depth of opening options outside the established Test pair and made him a frequent name in selection discussions for the Indian Test team.
