Drawn to the performing arts, he moved towards a career in cinema in the early 1950s, adopting the screen name "Prem Nazir" at the suggestion of producers in the Malayalam film industry.

Film Career

Beginnings

Nazir made his debut in the Malayalam film Marumakal (1952). His first major break came with Visappinte Vili (1952) and subsequent productions of the 1950s, during which he established himself as a leading man in an industry that was still being shaped.

His on-screen partnership with actress Sheela became one of the most celebrated lead pairings in Indian cinema, appearing together in a very large number of films across genres ranging from family melodramas to mythological and folk tales.
