Film career
Debut and early work (1998–2000)
Zinta made her acting debut with Mani Ratnam's Dil Se.. (1998), in which she appeared opposite Shah Rukh Khan in a supporting role. The same year she played the female lead in Soldier opposite Bobby Deol, which was a commercial success. These performances earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
Her role as a teenage unwed mother in Tanuja Chandra's Kya Kehna (2000) drew critical attention for tackling an uncommon theme in mainstream Hindi cinema of that period.
Rise to prominence (2001–2005)
Zinta consolidated her position as a leading actress with a series of widely seen films, including Chori Chori Chupke Chupke (2001), Dil Chahta Hai (2001) directed by Farhan Akhtar, Dil Hai Tumhaara (2002), and The Hero: Love Story of a Spy (2003).
She received the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance as Zaara Hayaat Khan in Yash Chopra's cross-border romance Veer-Zaara (2004), opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Other notable films from this period include Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Koi... Mil Gaya (2003) and its sequel Krrish (2006), and Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006).
Later work and hiatus
After Heroes (2008) and Har Pal (2008), Zinta took a step back from regular leading roles. She produced and starred in Ishkq in Paris (2013) under her banner PZNZ Media. In subsequent years she has appeared in occasional film and television projects, including the Punjabi-language film Bhaiaji Superhit (2018) and the Hindi production Lahore 1947.
Indian Premier League ownership
In 2008, Zinta, along with industrialist Ness Wadia, Mohit Burman and Karan Paul, acquired the Mohali-based franchise Kings XI Punjab in the inaugural Indian Premier League auction. The team was rebranded as Punjab Kings in 2021. She has been a regular and visible presence at the franchise's matches and is among the few women to be a public co-owner of an IPL team.
Business and other activities
Zinta has been associated with multiple brand endorsements through her career and has occasionally written newspaper columns. She has been involved in charitable work in areas such as women's welfare, child education, and disaster relief, including contributions following the 2005 Kashmir earthquake.
Personal life
Zinta married Gene Goodenough, an American finance executive based in Los Angeles, in February 2016 in a private ceremony. The couple, who have twins born via surrogacy in 2021, primarily reside in the United States, with Zinta travelling to India for film and IPL-related commitments.
Significance
Preity Zinta is recognised for portraying assertive, modern female characters in mainstream Hindi cinema during the late 1990s and 2000s, a period when the industry was expanding its global audience. Her image as an outspoken and independent public figure, along with her role as a co-owner of an IPL franchise, made her among the early Indian film actresses to take on a high-profile sports business role.
