Background

Pooja Bhatt was born in Mumbai to filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and his first wife Kiran. She belongs to a prominent film family; her uncle Mukesh Bhatt is a producer and co-founder of Vishesh Films, and her cousin Emraan Hashmi is an actor. Her younger half-sisters, Alia Bhatt and Shaheen Bhatt, are her father's daughters from his second marriage to actress Soni Razdan.

Career

Acting debut and stardom

Pooja Bhatt made her acting debut as a teenager in the television film Daddy (1989), directed by her father, in which she played the daughter of an alcoholic. The performance won her a Lions Club award. She made her theatrical debut with Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin (1991), a Mahesh Bhatt-directed romantic film co-starring Aamir Khan, which became one of the year's biggest commercial successes.

1990s filmography

The same year, she appeared in Sadak (1991) opposite Sanjay Dutt, another major hit directed by her father. Through the 1990s she featured in films including Junoon (1992), Sir (1993), Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee (1993), Naaraaz (1994), Chaahat (1996) opposite Shah Rukh Khan, Tamanna (1997), and Zakhm (1998). She received critical praise for socially themed roles, and Mahesh Bhatt's Zakhm, in which she played a supporting role, won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration.

Production and direction

In 2002, Pooja Bhatt established her own production company, Fish Eye Network, and gradually moved away from acting to focus on filmmaking. As producer she backed films such as Paap (2004), Holiday (2006), Dhokha (2007), and Kajraare (2010). She made her directorial debut with Paap (2004), starring John Abraham and Udita Goswami. Her later directorial ventures include Holiday (2006) and Kajraare (2010).

Return to acting and digital work

After a long break, she returned to acting in Sadak 2 (2020), the sequel to her 1991 hit, directed by Mahesh Bhatt and released on Disney+ Hotstar. In 2023, she appeared as a contestant on the reality show Bigg Boss OTT 2, finishing as a finalist.
