Background
Mani Ratnam had reportedly attempted to adapt Kalki's novel for the screen since the 1980s. The project was eventually mounted as a two-part film in the early 2020s, with both parts shot largely back-to-back. The story is set in the 10th century and dramatises events surrounding the early life of the Chola prince Arulmozhi Varman, who later ascended the throne as Rajaraja I. The novel's title, meaning "the son of the Ponni" (a literary name for the river Kaveri), refers to him.

Plot context
The second part follows the deepening conflict over Chola succession after the events of the first film. It explores the relationship between Aditha Karikalan and Nandini, the political ambitions of the Pazhuvettarayar brothers, the rescue of Arulmozhi Varman from the sea, and culminates in the events leading up to his eventual coronation. While the film condenses several strands of the four-volume novel, it retains the central love, betrayal, and political intrigue of Kalki's narrative.
Production
Principal photography was conducted across multiple Indian and overseas locations, including Thailand, with significant portions filmed at studio sets in Hyderabad and Chennai. The production used large-scale period sets, costumes designed by Eka Lakhani, and visual effects by multiple Indian VFX studios. The film's music, composed by A. R. Rahman, included songs such as "Veera Raja Veera", which drew on Carnatic and devotional musical traditions.
Release and reception
Ponniyin Selvan: II released theatrically worldwide on 28 April 2023 in Tamil along with dubbed versions in Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada. It later premiered on Amazon Prime Video for digital streaming. The film received generally favourable reviews from critics, who praised the performances of the lead cast, Rahman's score, Ravi Varman's cinematography, and the production design, while some reviewers noted the challenges of compressing the novel's later volumes into a single film.
Significance
The two-part Ponniyin Selvan project is regarded as one of the most ambitious adaptations of Tamil literature for cinema. It revived broad public interest in the Chola period, in Kalki's writings, and in heritage sites associated with the dynasty such as the Brihadisvara Temple at Thanjavur. The film also marked a notable collaboration between Mani Ratnam and several leading actors of Tamil and Indian cinema, and reaffirmed the commercial viability of large-scale period films in Tamil.
