Overview
Polavaram district is a proposed administrative district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is associated with the region surrounding the town of Polavaram, which lies on the banks of the Godavari river and is best known as the site of the multi-purpose Polavaram Irrigation Project.

Background
Andhra Pradesh has periodically reorganised its districts to bring administration closer to citizens. In January 2022, the state government carried out a major reorganisation that increased the number of districts from 13 to 26, with most new districts carved along the boundaries of parliamentary constituencies. Subsequent proposals have sought to create additional districts, including one centred on Polavaram, primarily to better administer the tribal-majority belt along the Godavari and to coordinate the rehabilitation and resettlement work linked to the Polavaram project.
Geography
The Polavaram region lies in the Godavari basin in the eastern part of Andhra Pradesh, in terrain that transitions from the Eastern Ghats in the north to the deltaic plains in the south. The area includes forested uplands inhabited by Scheduled Tribe communities, including Koya and other Adivasi groups, and lies adjacent to parts of Eluru, East Godavari and Alluri Sitharama Raju districts.
Significance
The principal feature shaping the identity of the proposed district is the Polavaram Project, a national project on the Godavari intended to provide irrigation, drinking water, and hydroelectric power across multiple districts of Andhra Pradesh. The project has involved large-scale land acquisition and rehabilitation of displaced families, particularly tribal households, making focused district-level administration in this area administratively significant.
