Phagwara

Overview

Phagwara is a city and municipal corporation in the Kapurthala district of the state of Punjab in northern India. Located in the Doaba region, between the Beas and Sutlej rivers, Phagwara is one of the most industrialised towns of Punjab and is known for its sugar mills, textile units, and a large diaspora population settled across the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States and Italy.

Geography

Phagwara lies on the Grand Trunk Road (National Highway 44), roughly midway between Jalandhar and Ludhiana. Although it falls within the administrative boundary of Kapurthala district, it is geographically closer to Jalandhar city. The terrain is part of the alluvial plains of the Doaba and is intensively cultivated, with wheat, sugarcane, maize, and potato as common crops.

History

The town's origins are traditionally traced to a settlement of considerable antiquity, and it later formed part of the princely state of Kapurthala under the Ahluwalia dynasty before the integration of the princely states into independent India. Until 1947, Phagwara had a mixed population that included Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims; following the Partition of India, there was a major demographic exchange, with Muslims migrating to Pakistan and Hindu and Sikh refugees from West Punjab settling in the town.

Phagwara was upgraded from a municipal council to a municipal corporation, reflecting its growing population and urban expansion.

Economy and Industry

Phagwara has a long-standing industrial base. Notable industrial establishments associated with the town include:

• The Sugar Mills (JCT and Wahid Sandhar Sugars) – sugar production has historically been a mainstay of the local economy.
• JCT Limited – textile and filament yarn manufacturing.
• Light engineering, hosiery, and small-scale manufacturing units.

Trade in agricultural produce, particularly grain and sugarcane, is supported by the local mandi system. Remittances from the non-resident Indian community also play a significant role in the local economy and real estate sector.

Education

Phagwara is home to Lovely Professional University (LPU), one of the largest private universities in India by student enrolment, located on the GT Road on the outskirts of the city. Other institutions in and around the town include Ramgarhia Polytechnic College, Ramgarhia Girls College, and several senior secondary schools affiliated to the CBSE, ICSE and Punjab School Education Board.

Transport

• Road: The city lies on National Highway 44 (the old GT Road), connecting it to Delhi, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar.
• Rail: Phagwara Junction railway station is on the Delhi–Amritsar main line of Northern Railway and is served by major express and superfast trains.
• Air: The nearest airports are Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar and Adampur Airport near Jalandhar.

Demographics and Society

The population is predominantly Punjabi-speaking and includes Sikhs, Hindus and a smaller Christian community. The town is notable for the strong presence of Ravidassia and Ramgarhia communities, both of which maintain prominent religious and social institutions locally and abroad. The Dera Sachkhand Ballan, an important centre of the Ravidassia tradition, is situated in the village of Ballan near Phagwara and is a major pilgrimage site for followers from India and the diaspora.
