Geography and connectivity
Petrapole lies a short distance east of Bongaon, the nearest municipal town, and is connected to Kolkata by road and rail. The crossing forms part of the historic trunk route linking Kolkata with Jessore and Dhaka. Bongaon railway station, on the Sealdah–Bangaon line of the Eastern Railway, serves as the closest railhead. The road from Petrapole continues into Bangladesh as the Benapole–Jessore–Dhaka highway.
Background
The Petrapole–Benapole crossing acquired its present significance after the Partition of Bengal in 1947, when the boundary between India and East Pakistan (later Bangladesh, from 1971) cut across long-standing trade and travel routes. Through the latter half of the twentieth century the crossing functioned with limited customs and immigration infrastructure, and a substantial share of bilateral overland trade came to be routed through it because of its location on the most direct surface link between Kolkata and Dhaka.
Integrated Check Post
To modernise India's land borders, the Government of India established the Land Ports Authority of India under the Land Ports Authority of India Act, 2010. Petrapole was developed as one of the first generation of Integrated Check Posts, bringing customs, immigration, security, quarantine, warehousing, parking and passenger facilities under a single managed campus. The ICP at Petrapole was inaugurated in 2016 and is among the largest land ports in South Asia by trade throughput.
Facilities
- Passenger terminal for immigration and customs clearance.
- Cargo terminal with warehouses, weighbridges and truck parking yards.
- Plant and animal quarantine facilities.
- Currency exchange, banking and basic amenities for travellers.
- BSF outposts and border infrastructure along the adjoining international boundary.
Trade and movement
Petrapole accounts for a major share of India–Bangladesh land-based trade by value. Principal Indian exports moving through the checkpoint include cotton, vehicles and parts, machinery, raw materials for industry, and food products; Bangladeshi exports through Benapole include readymade garments, jute and jute goods, and processed foods. The crossing also handles a steady flow of passenger traffic, including patients travelling to India for medical treatment, students, and visitors using tourist and business visas.

Significance
Petrapole is regarded as the most important land port on India's eastern frontier. Its operations directly affect bilateral trade volumes, supply chains in eastern India, and people-to-people movement between West Bengal and Bangladesh. The checkpoint is also strategically significant for the Border Security Force, which guards the surrounding stretch of the India–Bangladesh border, and is a recurring subject in discussions of South Asian regional connectivity, including initiatives such as BBIN (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal) motor vehicle movement.
