Overview

Periyar University is a state university located in Salem, Tamil Nadu, India. It was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1997 and is named after the social reformer Thanthai Periyar E. V. Ramasamy.

The University Grants Commission, New Delhi, granted 2(f) status to the university in 1998 and 12(B) status in 2005, recognising it under the relevant provisions of the UGC Act.

The university is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an 'A++' grade, having been awarded a cumulative grade point average of 3.61 out of 4, corresponding to the performance descriptor "Excellent". According to the source, Periyar University is the first state university to be accredited with an 'A++' grade by NAAC, and was ranked second in India after the University of Mumbai and first among state universities in Tamil Nadu on this measure.
