Overview

Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science and Technology is a private deemed-to-be university located in the town of Vallam, in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, India. The institution was earlier known as Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women and, subsequently, as Periyar Maniammai University (PMU) before being reconstituted under its present name.

The institute's headquarters and main campus are situated in Vallam. The campus extends over 115 acres (47 hectares) and lies approximately 45 kilometres (28 miles) east of Tiruchirapalli and about 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) west of Thanjavur, placing it within the Cauvery delta region of central Tamil Nadu.

As a deemed-to-be university, the institute offers programmes in science, technology and allied disciplines. Its evolution from a women's college of technology to a coeducational deemed university reflects a gradual broadening of its academic scope.
