Geography
Panvel lies at the eastern end of the creek that separates the island city of Mumbai from the Konkan mainland. The terrain around the city is characterised by low hills of the Western Ghats foothills to the east, mangrove-lined creeks to the west, and alluvial flats along the Gadhi and Kalundre rivers. The Matheran hill station and the Karnala Bird Sanctuary lie a short distance to the south-east of the city.
History
Panvel is among the older settlements in the Konkan and historically functioned as a trading port on the creek system feeding into the Arabian Sea. Under the Maratha period and later the Bombay Presidency, it was a halting point on the route between Bombay and the Deccan via the Bhor and Khandala ghats. The town was constituted as a municipal council during the British period, and it retained this status for many decades after independence before being upgraded.
Civic upgrade
In 2016, the Government of Maharashtra constituted the Panvel Municipal Corporation, merging the erstwhile Panvel Municipal Council with surrounding gram panchayats and parts of the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) area. This made Panvel one of the newer municipal corporations in the state and the first within Raigad district.
Transport
Road
Panvel is a major road junction. The Mumbai–Pune Expressway, National Highway 48 (the old Mumbai–Bengaluru/Pune corridor), and National Highway 66 (the Mumbai–Goa highway) all pass through or near the city, making it a key gateway between Mumbai and the rest of the Konkan, western Maharashtra and Goa.
Railway
Panvel Junction is one of the busiest railway stations in the Mumbai suburban network. It is served by the Harbour Line and the Trans-Harbour Line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway, and it is also a major halt for long-distance trains of the Central Railway and Konkan Railway zones. Panvel is the originating station for many trains heading down the Konkan coast towards Goa, Mangaluru and Kerala.
Air
The Navi Mumbai International Airport, developed by CIDCO and operating partners, is located at Ulwe near Panvel and is intended to serve as the second international airport for the Mumbai region.
Economy and urban development
Panvel's economy combines traditional commerce, agriculture in the surrounding villages, and rapidly expanding real estate, logistics and services activity driven by its proximity to Navi Mumbai and the upcoming airport. CIDCO has developed several planned nodes around Panvel, including Kalamboli, Kamothe, Kharghar and New Panvel, which are administratively part of the Panvel Municipal Corporation area or adjoining it.
Education and institutions
The Panvel area hosts a number of educational institutions, including engineering, management, medical and arts colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai and other state universities. CIDCO's planned nodes around Panvel also house specialised institutions in fields such as architecture and information technology.
Culture
The cultural life of Panvel reflects its Konkani Marathi heritage, with festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi, Holi, Gudi Padwa and Navratri being prominent. The town has historic temples, mosques and churches, and the surrounding region is associated with forts of the Maratha period, including the nearby Karnala Fort.
