Background

Pandhurna town, the administrative headquarters of the new district, lies on the southern edge of the Satpura range and sits close to the Maharashtra border. The region's economy has traditionally been based on agriculture, with orange cultivation being especially prominent in the broader Chhindwara–Pandhurna belt. The town is also widely known for the Gotmar Mela, a traditional fair observed annually on the banks of the Jam river.

Formation

The Government of Madhya Pradesh announced the creation of Pandhurna as a separate district by separating it from Chhindwara district. The new district comprises tehsils that were earlier part of Chhindwara, with Pandhurna serving as the district headquarters. The reorganisation was intended to improve administrative reach in the southern part of the older district.

Geography

The district lies in the southern part of Madhya Pradesh and shares boundaries with districts of Maharashtra, including those in the Vidarbha region. Its terrain is shaped by the Satpura uplands and is drained by tributaries of the Wardha river system, with the Jam river running through Pandhurna town.

Administration

Like other districts of Madhya Pradesh, Pandhurna is administered by a District Collector and Magistrate, with a Superintendent of Police heading the district police. The district falls under the Jabalpur revenue division.

Culture

The Gotmar Mela, held between the villages of Pandhurna and Sawargaon, is the most prominent cultural event associated with the district. It draws large crowds and is recognised as a distinctive folk tradition of the region.
