Geography
The town occupies the eastern bank of the Mahananda, opposite English Bazar. The Kalindri river meets the Mahananda near the town, and this riverine setting historically gave Old Malda an advantage as a trading and transhipment point in the Bengal delta. The terrain is part of the alluvial plain of the lower Ganga basin, with mango orchards forming a characteristic feature of the surrounding countryside, as in much of Malda district.
History
Old Malda developed as a riverside trading settlement associated with the medieval capitals of Bengal at Gaur and Pandua, both of which lie within the present Malda district. With the decline of those cities, Malda emerged as a commercial centre handling goods such as silk, cotton textiles, indigo and rice, drawing the attention of European trading companies during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Factories operated in the area by the Dutch, French and English East India Companies stimulated the growth of the older town.
As trade later shifted across the river, English Bazar grew to overshadow the original settlement, which came to be distinguished as "Old" Malda. Under British administration the district headquarters were established at English Bazar, while Old Malda retained its identity as a separate municipal town.
Civic administration
Local government is provided by the Old Malda Municipality, which is responsible for civic services such as water supply, sanitation, roads, street lighting and local markets within the municipal limits. The town falls under the jurisdiction of the Malda district administration and the relevant subdivision of the district.
Transport
Old Malda is served by Old Malda Junction railway station on the Eastern Railway, which lies on the Sahibganj Loop and is a junction for the branch line running towards Singhabad on the India–Bangladesh border. The station handles passenger and goods traffic and connects the town with Kolkata, Bihar and northern West Bengal. The town is also linked by road to English Bazar and to National Highway connections passing through the Malda area.
Economy
The local economy is closely tied to the agricultural hinterland of Malda district, which is well known for the cultivation of mangoes, jute, rice and mulberry-based silk. Old Malda functions as a market town for surrounding rural areas, with trade in agricultural produce and small-scale commerce forming an important part of its economic base. Railway-related employment and services associated with the junction also contribute to the town's economy.
Culture and demographics
The population of Old Malda is mixed, with Bengali-speaking Hindu and Muslim communities forming the principal groups, alongside smaller communities. Bengali is the dominant language, while Hindi, Urdu and English are also used. Festivals such as Durga Puja, Eid, Kali Puja and local fairs are observed in the town, reflecting the broader cultural pattern of the Malda region.
Significance
Old Malda is significant as the historic nucleus from which the modern Malda urban area developed. Its position near the medieval capitals of Bengal and its role in early modern river-based trade give it a place in the wider history of Bengal, even though administrative and commercial functions have largely shifted to neighbouring English Bazar.
