Overview

Old Harbour House is a heritage building located in Fort Kochi, in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, India. Set within the historic precinct of Fort Kochi, the property is among several colonial-era structures that survive in the area and reflect the layered Portuguese, Dutch and British influences that shaped the architecture of the old port town. It currently functions as a heritage hotel.

Background

Fort Kochi developed as one of the earliest European settlements on the Indian subcontinent, beginning with the arrival of the Portuguese in the early sixteenth century, followed by the Dutch and later the British. The neighbourhood retains a distinctive streetscape of bungalows, warehouses and merchants' houses that grew out of this trading history. Old Harbour House sits within this conservation-sensitive zone, close to the waterfront associated with the Chinese fishing nets and the historic harbour from which it takes its name.

Architecture and setting

The building exhibits the colonial residential idiom typical of Fort Kochi, with features such as deep verandahs, tiled roofs and walled garden compounds that were adapted to the humid coastal climate of the Malabar coast. Its setting near the harbour and within walking distance of landmarks such as St. Francis Church and the Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica places it firmly within the heritage tourism circuit of the town.

Use

Old Harbour House operates as a boutique heritage hotel, a common adaptive reuse for surviving colonial properties in Fort Kochi. Such conversions have played a role in the preservation of the area's built heritage by sustaining maintenance of older structures.
