Etymology and history
The town derives its name from Nur Mahal, a title associated with Nur Jahan, the consort of the Mughal emperor Jahangir. According to local tradition, Nur Jahan spent part of her early life in the area, and the settlement and its sarai were developed under her patronage during the early 17th century.
Nurmahal Sarai
The most prominent monument in the town is the Nurmahal Sarai, a Mughal caravanserai built during the reign of Jahangir. Constructed in the early 1600s, the sarai was a halting station on the imperial route between Delhi and Lahore. The structure is rectangular in plan, enclosed by high stone walls, and features two grand gateways decorated with stone carvings depicting human and animal figures, floral motifs, and geometric patterns. The site is a centrally protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.
Geography
Nurmahal lies in the alluvial plains of the Doaba sub-region of Punjab. The terrain is largely flat and agricultural, with wheat, rice, sugarcane, and potato among the principal crops grown in the surrounding villages. The town is connected by road to Phillaur, Phagwara, and Jalandhar, the district headquarters.
Administration
Nurmahal is administered by a municipal council under the Punjab Municipal Act. It also functions as the seat of the Nurmahal tehsil within Jalandhar district. The town falls within the Phillaur assembly constituency for elections to the Punjab Legislative Assembly and within the Jalandhar Lok Sabha constituency.
Demographics and economy
The population is predominantly Punjabi-speaking, with Sikhs and Hindus forming the major communities. The local economy is based on agriculture, agro-processing, retail trade, and small-scale industry. Remittances from members of the Punjabi diaspora, particularly from families settled abroad, are a notable feature of the town's economic life, in keeping with the wider Doaba region.
Culture and notable institutions
Nurmahal is the headquarters of the Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan, a socio-spiritual organisation founded by Ashutosh Maharaj. The organisation operates a large ashram complex on the outskirts of the town, which draws followers from across India and abroad.
Transport
The town is served by road links to the Grand Trunk Road via Phillaur. The nearest major railway junctions are at Phillaur and Phagwara, while Jalandhar Cantt and Jalandhar City stations provide wider rail connectivity.
