Following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, NIMS came under the administrative jurisdiction of the Government of Telangana.

NIMS functions both as a tertiary care hospital and as a deemed-style university empowered to grant its own degrees through state legislation. The campus is situated in Punjagutta, a central commercial and institutional area of Hyderabad, and houses the main hospital block, outpatient services, academic and research facilities, and residential quarters for faculty and trainees. Its central location makes it one of the principal referral centres for patients from across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring states.
Significance
NIMS is regarded as one of the leading public-sector tertiary referral institutions in southern India. It plays a substantial role in subsidised superspecialty care, postgraduate medical education, and clinical research, and serves as an empanelled provider for various state-funded health insurance schemes operated by the Government of Telangana.
