Background
The Nirula family began their hospitality business in Connaught Place, Delhi, in the mid-twentieth century, initially running a hotel and restaurant. Over the following decades the family expanded into multiple food formats under the Nirula's name, including a hotel, a coffee shop, a pastry shop, an Indian restaurant, and ice cream parlours. The chain became a fixture of middle-class urban life in Delhi and other North Indian cities.
History
Nirula's introduced its Hot Shoppe concept in Connaught Place, which combined a quick-service counter with a sit-down family restaurant. It was among the first establishments in India to popularise the hamburger, pizza, and softy ice cream outside of luxury hotels. The Pegasus Bar and the 21 Love Lanes ice cream menu, with its distinctive flavour names, became part of Delhi's popular food culture.
Through the 1980s and 1990s, the chain grew through company-owned outlets and franchising across cities including New Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gurgaon, Lucknow, Dehradun, and others in North India. The arrival of international chains such as McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Domino's, and KFC in India from the mid-1990s onward intensified competition in the fast food segment.
In 2006, the Nirula family sold a majority stake in the company to Navis Capital Partners, a Malaysia-based private equity firm. The business was subsequently sold again, with ownership later passing to A2Z Excursions / Samir Kuckreja-led groups and other Indian investors in successive transactions. During this period, several outlets were closed and the chain was repositioned, though it retained a loyal customer base for legacy products such as its ice creams and the Big Boy burger.
Menu and brand identity
Nirula's menu blended Indian and Western fast food. Signature items included the Big Boy hamburger, Mutton Maniac, Hot Chocolate Fudge sundae, and a wide range of ice cream flavours marketed under names such as Zaffran Badam Pista and Thunderstorm. The chain's mascot and red-and-white branding were widely recognised in North India.
Significance
Nirula's holds a notable place in the history of Indian organised food retail. It pioneered several restaurant formats in India before economic liberalisation opened the market to global chains, and it served as a training ground for many professionals who later moved into India's expanding hospitality and quick-service restaurant industry. For generations of Delhi residents, the brand is closely tied to memories of Connaught Place and family outings.
