Overview

Nicco Park is an amusement and theme park located in Bidhannagar (Salt Lake City), on the eastern fringe of Kolkata in the Indian state of West Bengal. One of the earliest large-scale amusement parks established in eastern India, it has been a prominent recreation destination for residents of Kolkata and the wider region since the early 1990s. The park is operated by Nicco Parks & Resorts Limited, a public limited company associated with the Nicco group of companies.

Location and setting

The park is situated in Sector IV of Salt Lake, a planned township in the Bidhannagar municipal area adjoining Kolkata. It lies close to the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass and is connected to central Kolkata by road and by the Kolkata Metro's East–West corridor, which serves Salt Lake. The site covers a sizeable landscaped campus that includes themed zones, water rides, dry rides, food courts and event spaces.

Background

Nicco Parks & Resorts Limited was promoted as part of a diversification by the Nicco group, an industrial conglomerate historically known for its cable manufacturing business based in West Bengal. The company entered the leisure and entertainment sector when amusement parks were still a relatively new concept in India, with the Kolkata facility designed as its flagship property.

Attractions

The park offers a mix of mechanical rides, water-based attractions and family-oriented experiences. Notable features have included:

  • A roller coaster, popularly known among visitors as the "Cyclone".
  • A log flume water ride.
  • A pirate-ship style swinging ride.
  • A toy train circling parts of the park.
  • A dedicated water park section featuring wave pools and slides.
  • Children's rides, bumper cars and a Ferris wheel.

Operations and significance

Nicco Park has been one of the principal organised leisure venues in eastern India and is frequently used for school excursions, family outings and corporate events. The park has hosted seasonal festivals and cultural programmes, particularly around Durga Puja, the winter holiday season and the New Year. It has played a role in establishing the amusement park industry in India and is among the longer-running parks of its kind in the country.

Nicco Parks & Resorts Limited, the company that owns and operates the park, is listed on Indian stock exchanges. Beyond the Salt Lake property, the company has been associated with consultancy and operation of leisure projects elsewhere in India.
