Background

Neha Kakkar was born on 6 June 1988 in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, into a family of modest means. She is the youngest of three siblings; her elder sister Sonu Kakkar is also a playback singer, and her brother Tony Kakkar is a singer and music composer. The family later moved to Delhi, where Neha began performing devotional songs (jagrans and bhajans) at a young age, an activity that contributed to the household income and shaped her early stage experience.

Career

Early years and reality television

Kakkar gained her first major exposure as a contestant on Indian Idol 2, telecast on Sony Entertainment Television in 2005–06. Although she was eliminated before the finals, the visibility led to recording opportunities. Her debut studio album, Neha The Rock Star, was released in 2008, but a sustained playback career took several more years to develop.

Breakthrough in Hindi cinema

Her commercial breakthrough came with the song "Sunny Sunny" from the film Yaariyan (2014), composed by Yo Yo Honey Singh. This was followed by widely circulated tracks such as "London Thumakda" from Queen (2014) and "Manali Trance" from The Shaukeens (2014). Through the latter half of the 2010s, she recorded a steady stream of dance numbers, item songs, recreated versions of older hits, and romantic tracks for Hindi films.

Singles and Punjabi pop

Alongside film playback, Kakkar built a substantial catalogue of independent singles, many composed by her brother Tony Kakkar and released through labels such as T-Series and Desi Music Factory. These tracks, often promoted through music videos on YouTube, contributed significantly to her digital popularity and made her one of the most-streamed Indian artists on the platform.

Television

Kakkar has served as a judge on multiple seasons of Indian Idol, returning to the show that first introduced her to audiences. She has also appeared as a judge on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li'l Champs and similar music-based reality formats.

Personal life

Neha Kakkar married Punjabi singer Rohanpreet Singh in October 2020. The couple's wedding and subsequent music collaborations received wide media coverage. She continues to be based in Mumbai for professional work.

Style and significance

Kakkar's voice is generally associated with high-tempo dance tracks, party anthems, and recreated versions of older Bollywood and Punjabi songs. Her work reflects a broader trend in 2010s Hindi film music, in which singles, recreations, and YouTube-driven releases became central to the industry's commercial model. She is among the Indian female playback singers with the largest social media followings, and her career trajectory—from a reality show contestant to a judge on the same show—is frequently cited in Indian entertainment journalism.
