Nayanthara is an Indian actress who works predominantly in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam cinema. Often referred to in the popular press as the "Lady Superstar," she is among the most prominent and highest-paid female actors in South Indian cinema. She made her acting debut in the Malayalam film Manassinakkare (2003) and has since appeared in over seventy-five films across multiple languages, including Hindi.

Background
Nayanthara was born into a Malayali Christian family. Her father, Kurian Kodiyattu, served in the Indian Air Force, and the family relocated frequently during her childhood, with extended periods in Jamnagar, Gujarat, and later in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. She completed her schooling in Thirumoolapuram, Kerala, and obtained a degree in English literature from Mar Thoma College, Thiruvalla. She initially pursued modelling before being cast by director Sathyan Anthikad in Manassinakkare, opposite Jayaram.
Career
Early years (2003–2005)
After her Malayalam debut in 2003, Nayanthara entered Tamil cinema with Ayya (2005), directed by Hari and starring Sarathkumar. The same year, she made her Telugu debut in Lakshmi. Her early Tamil successes included Ghajini (2005), directed by A. R. Murugadoss, in which she appeared opposite Suriya.
Establishment in Tamil and Telugu cinema (2006–2011)
Through the late 2000s, she appeared in commercially successful films such as Chandramukhi (2005, supporting role) with Rajinikanth, Billa (2007) with Ajith Kumar, Yaaradi Nee Mohini (2008) with Dhanush, and Aadhavan (2009) with Suriya. In Telugu, she worked in films including Adhurs (2010) and Sri Rama Rajyam (2011), in which she played Sita opposite Balakrishna; the latter performance won her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu and the Nandi Award for Best Actress.
Sabbatical and return (2011–2014)
Nayanthara took a brief break from acting around 2011–2012. She returned with Sri Rama Rajyam and subsequently Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum (2012) and the Tamil film Raja Rani (2013), directed by Atlee, for which she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Tamil.
Lead-driven roles (2015–present)
From the mid-2010s, Nayanthara increasingly led films in central roles, a relatively uncommon trajectory for female actors in Tamil cinema. Notable titles include Maya (2015), Naanum Rowdy Dhaan (2015), Iru Mugan (2016), Dora (2017), Aramm (2017), Kolamaavu Kokila (2018), Imaikkaa Nodigal (2018), and Airaa (2019). She continued to work in star ensembles, appearing in Viswasam (2019) with Ajith Kumar and Darbar (2020) and Annaatthe (2021) with Rajinikanth.
She made her Hindi-language debut in Jawan (2023), directed by Atlee and co-starring Shah Rukh Khan, which became one of the highest-grossing Indian films of that year. Other later projects include Connect (2022), Godfather (2022, Telugu, with Chiranjeevi), and Iraivan (2023).
Production work
Nayanthara co-founded the production house Rowdy Pictures with director and partner Vignesh Shivan. The banner has produced films including Netrikann (2021) and Koozhangal (2021), the latter being India's official entry to the 94th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.
Personal life
Nayanthara married filmmaker Vignesh Shivan on 9 June 2022 in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu. The couple welcomed twin sons through surrogacy in October 2022. The Netflix documentary Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale (2024) chronicles aspects of her life and career.
