Background
NUALS was established as part of the wider movement in India, beginning with the foundation of the National Law School of India University in Bangalore in 1987, to create autonomous, specialised universities devoted exclusively to legal education. Following this model, the Government of Kerala set up NUALS to function as the state's flagship institution for the study of law.
The university was initially constituted under a state ordinance and later given full statutory recognition through an Act of the Kerala Legislative Assembly. It has since functioned as an autonomous body governed by its own General Council and Executive Council, with the Chief Justice of the High Court of Kerala serving as its Chancellor.
Campus
The university is located at Kalamassery in the Kochi metropolitan area, on a campus shared in proximity with other higher-education institutions in Ernakulam district. The campus houses academic blocks, a library, hostels, and moot court facilities used for legal training.
Academics
NUALS offers an integrated five-year undergraduate programme leading to the B.A., LL.B. (Honours) degree, which is the standard course of study at National Law Universities in India. The university also offers postgraduate programmes leading to the LL.M. degree, along with doctoral research opportunities (Ph.D.) in various branches of law.
Admission to the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes is conducted through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), the centralised entrance examination administered by the Consortium of National Law Universities.
Research and publications
The university has centres and chairs that focus on areas such as intellectual property law, environmental law, and constitutional studies. Faculty and students contribute to peer-reviewed law journals published by the university, and the institution hosts seminars, moot court competitions, and academic conferences.
Significance
As Kerala's only National Law University, NUALS plays a central role in shaping legal education in the state. It draws students from across India through CLAT and contributes graduates to the legal profession, the judiciary, public policy, academia, and corporate practice.
