Background
India has long maintained sports training institutions such as the Sports Authority of India (SAI), the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE) in Gwalior, and the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NSNIS) in Patiala. However, prior to the establishment of NSU, the country lacked a dedicated university devoted exclusively to sports as an academic and research discipline. The creation of a sports-focused central university was envisaged to consolidate sports education with high-performance training under one institutional framework.
Establishment
The National Sports University was first announced as a government initiative for the North-East region. It was initially set up through an ordinance, which was subsequently replaced by the National Sports University Act, 2018, passed by Parliament. The Act provided the legal foundation for the university and its statutory bodies, including the Court, the Executive Council, and the Academic Council.
Mandate and Functions
- Promoting sports education in areas such as sports sciences, sports technology, sports management and coaching.
- Functioning as the national training centre for selected sports disciplines.
- Carrying out research in sports sciences and related areas.
- Establishing outlying campuses and study centres in India and abroad as the university may decide.
- Awarding degrees, diplomas and certificates in sports-related disciplines.
Academics
The university offers programmes spanning undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels in fields connected with physical education, sports coaching, sports sciences, and sports management. It also conducts certificate and diploma courses aimed at coaches, physical education teachers and athletes.
Location and Campus
The university is being developed in Imphal, Manipur, a state with a strong tradition of producing athletes in disciplines such as boxing, weightlifting, football, and hockey. The choice of Manipur reflects both the region's sporting culture and the central government's policy of strengthening higher education infrastructure in the North-East.
Significance
As India's first central university dedicated to sports, the National Sports University represents a structural shift in the country's approach to sports development, integrating academic study with athlete training. It is intended to serve as a feeder institution for elite sport, while also producing qualified coaches, sports scientists and administrators to support India's broader competitive ambitions in international events such as the Asian Games, the Commonwealth Games and the Olympic Games.
