Overview
The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), commonly referred to as the National Law School (NLS), is a Karnataka state law university located in Bengaluru, India. It was established under the Karnataka Act No. 22 of 1986 and is widely regarded as one of the country's leading institutions for legal education.
NLSIU offers a five-year integrated Bachelor of Arts–Bachelor of Laws (BA LLB) undergraduate programme and a one-year Master of Laws (LLM) programme, with admission to both conducted through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). The University also offers a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) undergraduate programme, a three-year postgraduate LLB (Honours) programme, a two-year Master's Programme in Public Policy, and doctoral degrees in law as well as in the social sciences, humanities and public policy.
The University is spread over a 23-acre campus and houses what is described as India's largest legal library. It hosts a number of well-known student competitions and events, including the NLS Debate and the Strawberry Fields cultural festival. NLSIU has consistently been ranked first in the law category of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
NLSIU is the only Indian institution to have won the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, having done so in 1999 and 2013. Twenty-five of its alumni have been Rhodes scholars.
