Overview
The National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (commonly known as NIT Tiruchirappalli or NIT Trichy) is a public autonomous engineering and technology institute located in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the thirty-one National Institutes of Technology established by the Government of India and is recognised as an Institute of National Importance under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007.

Background
NIT Tiruchirappalli began as Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli, established as a joint and cooperative enterprise of the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu. It was one of a network of Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) set up across Indian states from the late 1950s and 1960s to expand technical education capacity and serve regional and national development needs.
In 2003, REC Tiruchirappalli, along with other RECs in the country, was upgraded to the status of a National Institute of Technology, becoming a Deemed University fully funded by the central government. With the enactment of the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007, the institute was formally designated an Institute of National Importance.
Campus and Location
The institute is situated on the outskirts of Tiruchirappalli city in the Tiruchirappalli district of Tamil Nadu, in the Cauvery delta region of southern India. The residential campus accommodates academic departments, hostels, staff quarters, libraries, laboratories, and sports and recreational facilities.

NIT Tiruchirappalli offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across disciplines including civil, mechanical, electrical and electronics, electronics and communication, computer science, chemical, instrumentation and control, metallurgical and materials, production, and architecture, in addition to programmes in management, sciences, and humanities.

Admissions to undergraduate engineering programmes are made through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) via the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling. Postgraduate admissions are based on national-level examinations such as GATE, CAT, and CCMT/CCMN counselling, depending on the programme.
Governance
As a centrally funded technical institution, NIT Tiruchirappalli is governed under the framework of the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007. The institute is headed by a Director, with a Board of Governors and a Senate overseeing administrative and academic functions respectively. The NIT Council, chaired by the Union Minister of Education, provides overall coordination across the NIT system.
