NIT Meghalaya was set up as part of the Government of India's policy to expand the network of NITs to every major state, with the aim of strengthening technical education and promoting regional development in the North-Eastern region of India. The institute is one of ten new NITs sanctioned by the central government around 2009–2010.

It functions under the overall framework of the NIT Council, the apex governing body for all NITs in the country, and is funded by the Ministry of Education (formerly the Ministry of Human Resource Development).

Academics

The institute conducts programmes leading to the Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.), Master of Technology (M.Tech.), Master of Science (M.Sc.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. Departments cover core engineering disciplines such as Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Computer Science and Engineering, alongside departments of basic sciences and humanities.

Admission to undergraduate engineering programmes is conducted through the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) and centralised counselling via the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). Postgraduate admissions are based on the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and other national-level qualifying examinations.

Campus

NIT Meghalaya is located in Shillong and has been developing a permanent campus in the state. The institute provides hostel accommodation, library, laboratories, and computing facilities to support teaching and research activities.

Significance

As the only NIT in Meghalaya, the institute plays an important role in expanding access to high-quality technical education in the North-East. It contributes to the region's human resource development by drawing students from across India and producing graduates in engineering, applied sciences, and research.
