Type Public technical institute
Status Institute of National Importance
Location Kurukshetra, Haryana, India
Affiliation Ministry of Education, Government of India
Predecessor Regional Engineering College, Kurukshetra
Governing Act NIT Act, 2007

Background

The institute was originally established as the Regional Engineering College (REC), Kurukshetra, jointly funded by the Government of India and the Government of Haryana. Like other RECs, it was designed to expand access to high-quality engineering education on a regional basis, with seats divided between students from the host state and students from other states of India.

In 2002, the Government of India upgraded the Regional Engineering Colleges to National Institutes of Technology and brought them under direct central funding and administration. With the enactment of the National Institutes of Technology Act in 2007, NIT Kurukshetra acquired full Institute of National Importance status, granting it autonomy in academic and administrative matters and the authority to award its own degrees.

Academics

NIT Kurukshetra offers Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programmes across core engineering disciplines such as Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, and Production and Industrial Engineering. Postgraduate offerings include Master of Technology (M.Tech), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Computer Applications (MCA) and Master of Science (M.Sc) programmes, along with doctoral (Ph.D.) research in engineering, sciences, management and humanities.

Admission to the B.Tech programmes is conducted through the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) via the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) / Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling. M.Tech admissions are based on the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).

Campus

The campus is situated in the historic town of Kurukshetra, which is associated with the events of the Mahabharata and lies on the National Capital Region's northern fringe in Haryana. It is a residential campus, with hostels for students, faculty quarters, academic blocks, laboratories, a central library, sports facilities and a health centre.

Governance

As with the other NITs, the institute is administered through a Board of Governors, with the Director serving as the principal academic and executive officer. The institute is funded by the Ministry of Education of the Government of India.

Significance

NIT Kurukshetra is among the older technical institutions in northern India and has contributed to the engineering workforce, public services and academic research base of the country. Its alumni have taken up positions in industry, government, academia and entrepreneurship in India and abroad.
