The National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur (NIT Hamirpur) is a public technical university located in Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh, India. Background
The institute was founded in 1986 as Regional Engineering College (REC) Hamirpur, jointly administered by the Government of India and the Government of Himachal Pradesh. It was one of the regional engineering colleges set up across Indian states to expand technical education capacity outside the Indian Institutes of Technology.
In 2002, REC Hamirpur was upgraded to a National Institute of Technology and brought under the direct administration of the central government, becoming a fully autonomous deemed university. Its status was further consolidated through the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007, which granted Institute of National Importance status to all NITs.
Campus and location
The campus is situated on the Hamirpur–Awah Devi road in the town of Hamirpur in the lower Himalayan region of Himachal Pradesh. The hilly campus houses academic departments, hostels, residential quarters for faculty and staff, and central facilities such as a library, computer centre, sports grounds, and a health centre.
Academics
NIT Hamirpur is organised into multiple academic departments covering core engineering disciplines such as civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics and communication, computer science, chemical, materials, and architecture, alongside departments of physics, chemistry, mathematics and scientific computing, humanities and social sciences, and management studies.
- Undergraduate: Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) and Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) programmes, with admission through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) under the centralised Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling.
- Postgraduate: Master of Technology (M.Tech.), Master of Science (M.Sc.), and Master of Business Administration (MBA), with admission through GATE, IIT JAM, and CAT respectively.

Administration
The institute is governed by a Board of Governors in accordance with the NIT Act, 2007, and the senate is the principal academic body. The Director serves as the chief executive and academic officer, while the President of India is the Visitor of all NITs.

NIT Hamirpur is the principal centrally funded technical institution in Himachal Pradesh and contributes to engineering education, research, and industry linkages in the western Himalayan region.
