Background
NIT Calicut was originally established as the Calicut Regional Engineering College (CREC), one of a network of Regional Engineering Colleges set up across Indian states from the 1960s onwards as joint ventures between the Government of India and the respective state governments. The college was founded to address the demand for trained engineers in southern India, particularly in Kerala, and was jointly administered by the Union government and the Government of Kerala.
The campus is situated in a hilly, wooded area on the outskirts of Kozhikode city, off the National Highway connecting Kozhikode and Mukkam. It is one of the larger NIT campuses in terms of land area, with academic buildings, residential hostels, staff quarters, and recreational facilities organised across the site.
History and Timeline
- 1961: Established as the Calicut Regional Engineering College, jointly funded by the central and state governments.
- 2002: Upgraded to a National Institute of Technology and brought directly under the central government, gaining Deemed-to-be University status.
- 2007: Declared an Institute of National Importance through the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007, which gave statutory status to the NITs.
Academics
The institute is organised into departments and schools covering engineering, architecture, sciences, humanities, and management. Its core engineering departments include Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, and Chemical Engineering. The School of Architecture offers programmes in architecture and planning, and there are departments and centres for mathematics, physics, chemistry, humanities, and management studies.
Undergraduate admissions to the Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) programmes are made through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main), with seat allocation conducted by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) and the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB). Postgraduate admissions to M.Tech programmes are based primarily on the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), while doctoral admissions are conducted by individual departments.
Governance
NIT Calicut is governed under the framework of the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007. The institute is headed by a Director, with a Board of Governors as the principal governing body and a Senate that oversees academic matters. The President of India serves as the Visitor of the institute, in common with other NITs.
Campus and Student Life
The residential campus houses students in separate hostels for men and women, along with messes, a central library, computing facilities, sports grounds, and an auditorium. The institute hosts annual technical and cultural festivals organised by students, and supports a range of student technical clubs, professional society chapters, and sports activities.
Significance
As one of the older institutions in the NIT system, NIT Calicut has played a significant role in technical education in Kerala and southern India, producing engineers, architects, and researchers who have contributed to industry, academia, and public service in India and abroad. Along with peer institutions in the NIT and IIT systems, it forms part of the network of centrally funded technical institutions that drive engineering education and research in India.
