Overview
The National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) is an autonomous research institute located in Jatani, Odisha, India. It functions under the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, and is affiliated to the Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), which serves as its degree-awarding parent body.
The foundation stone of NISER was laid by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 28 August 2006. The establishment of the institute was conceived during his visit to Odisha, with the twin objectives of strengthening science education in the region and expanding educational infrastructure to address regional development needs. The Government of India earmarked an initial outlay of ₹823.19 crore for the first seven years of the project, with operations commencing in September 2007.
NISER offers an Integrated MSc programme in the natural sciences, which is its flagship academic offering. Admission to the programme is highly competitive, with reported acceptance rates typically in the range of about 1% to 2%.
HBNI, the parent institute of NISER, comprises ten constituent institutes along with two off-campus institutes. In the Nature Index 2024–25, compiled by Nature Research, HBNI was ranked second nationally in the academic sector in the field of natural sciences.
