Background
The NIPER system was created to develop indigenous capacity in pharmaceutical sciences and to provide high-quality postgraduate and doctoral education in areas relevant to the Indian pharmaceutical industry. The original NIPER at Mohali, Punjab, was declared an Institute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament. Following the success of that model, the Government of India announced additional NIPERs in different regions of the country, including one at Hajipur in Bihar, to broaden access to pharmaceutical research and training.
Academics and Research
NIPER Hajipur offers postgraduate and doctoral programmes in the pharmaceutical sciences. Areas of teaching and research typically associated with the institute include pharmaceutics, pharmacology and toxicology, pharmaceutical analysis, medicinal chemistry, and pharmacy practice. Admission to the master's programmes is conducted through a national-level entrance examination administered jointly with other NIPERs.
Location
The institute is located in Hajipur, a city on the northern bank of the Ganga across from Patna, the capital of Bihar. Hajipur is the administrative headquarters of Vaishali district, an area associated historically with the ancient republic of Vaishali.
Significance
NIPER Hajipur contributes to regional capacity building in pharmaceutical research and education in eastern India, supporting human-resource development for the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors. As part of the wider NIPER network, it participates in collaborative research, training, and policy support for the country's drug-discovery and drug-development ecosystem.
