Background

The NIPER system was conceived to create centres of excellence in pharmaceutical sciences, capable of producing trained manpower and high-quality research relevant to India's pharmaceutical industry and public health needs. The original institute, NIPER Mohali, was established in Punjab, and was later followed by additional NIPERs across different regions of the country, including Guwahati, to extend specialised pharmaceutical training to the eastern and north-eastern parts of India.

NIPER Guwahati was set up to serve as a regional hub for advanced study and research in disciplines such as medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, pharmacology and toxicology, pharmaceutical analysis, biotechnology, and pharmacy practice. As a north-eastern centre, it also has the opportunity to draw upon the region's rich biodiversity and traditional knowledge systems for natural products and drug discovery research.

Academics and research

NIPER Guwahati offers postgraduate and doctoral programmes in pharmaceutical sciences. Its academic activities are typically structured around departments covering core pharmacy disciplines, with admissions conducted through the centralised NIPER Joint Entrance Examination (NIPER-JEE).

  • Master's level programmes (M.S. Pharm. / M.Pharm.) in core pharmaceutical disciplines.
  • Doctoral (Ph.D.) research in pharmaceutical sciences.
  • Research areas spanning drug discovery, formulation development, natural products, and pharmaceutical analysis.

Significance

As part of the NIPER network, the Guwahati institute contributes to India's policy goals of strengthening domestic capacity in pharmaceutical research and innovation. Its presence in Assam supports the development of scientific infrastructure in the North East Region and provides opportunities for students from the region to pursue advanced pharmaceutical studies closer to home.
