It administers a tiered scheme of certifications popularly referred to as the O, A, B and C levels, which are recognised by the Government of India as equivalents to formal IT qualifications ranging from foundation to post-graduate level.
NIELIT operates through a network of centres across India, including those at Delhi, Calicut, Chandigarh, Aizawl, Imphal, Gangtok, Kohima, Itanagar, Shillong, Agartala, Srinagar, Aurangabad, Patna, Ropar, and Kurukshetra, among others. Its certifications are recognised by the Union Public Service Commission and various state governments for employment purposes, giving the institute a notable role in the non-formal IT education ecosystem of northern India.
