Overview
The National Institute of Design (NID) is a public design university located in Paldi, Ahmedabad, with extension campuses in Gandhinagar and Bengaluru. It is widely regarded as one of the foremost design schools in Asia, and offers programmes across various disciplines of design education, research and practice.
NID functions as an autonomous institute under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. It operates alongside the other National Institutes of Design established across the country, which together form a network of design-focused public institutions.
Under the National Institute of Design Act, 2014, NID Ahmedabad has been accorded the status of an Institute of National Importance. This statutory recognition empowers the institute to grant its own degrees and underscores its role in shaping design education and policy in India.
The institute has received recognition in international surveys of design schools, including a listing by Bloomberg Businessweek in 2009. In the QS World University Rankings by subject for art and design, it has been placed in the 51–100 band among institutions worldwide as of 2022.
