Background
NIBM was set up as part of a broader effort by the Reserve Bank of India and the Government of India to professionalise the management of Indian banks, particularly in the period following the nationalisation of major commercial banks in 1969. It was conceived as a "think tank" and a centre of excellence to provide policy-oriented research, training of senior bank executives, and consultancy support to the financial sector.
The institute is registered as a society and operates with autonomy, while its governance is closely linked to the Reserve Bank of India. The Governor of the Reserve Bank of India serves as the Chairman of NIBM's Governing Board, and member banks—both public sector and private sector—participate in its functioning.
Campus
NIBM is housed on a residential campus in Kondhwe Khurd, on the southern edge of Pune. The campus accommodates academic blocks, a library specialising in banking and finance, faculty and student housing, and management development centre facilities for serving bank officers attending short-duration programmes.
Academic and training activities
Post Graduate Programme
The institute conducts a two-year, full-time Post Graduate Diploma in Management with a specialisation in Banking and Financial Services (PGDM-BFS). The programme is aimed at preparing graduates for managerial roles in commercial banks, development finance institutions, regulatory bodies, and other segments of the financial services industry.
Executive education
NIBM conducts a large number of management development programmes, both open-enrolment and customised, for officers of public sector banks, private banks, cooperative banks, regional rural banks and regulators. Subject areas include credit and risk management, treasury and international banking, information technology in banking, human resources, rural and agricultural finance, and financial inclusion.

Research at NIBM covers banking policy, financial markets, credit risk, supervisory practices, financial inclusion and rural finance. The institute undertakes commissioned studies and consultancy assignments for the Reserve Bank of India, the Government of India, multilateral agencies and individual banks. It also publishes working papers and journals on banking and financial issues.

NIBM is regarded as one of the principal capacity-building institutions for the Indian banking sector, alongside bodies such as the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance and the College of Agricultural Banking. Its closeness to the Reserve Bank of India and its long engagement with the public sector banks have shaped training curricula, supervisory practices and policy research in Indian banking.
