Overview
The National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) is a research institution located in Bangalore, Karnataka, dedicated to biological research. It functions as a part of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), which operates under the Department of Atomic Energy of the Government of India.
The mandate of NCBS is to pursue basic and interdisciplinary research in the frontier areas of biology. The research interests of its faculty span four broad areas, ranging from the study of single molecules to systems biology. The centre brings together researchers working across multiple scales and disciplines within the biological sciences.
NCBS was founded under the leadership of Obaid Siddiqi FRS (7 January 1932 – 26 July 2013), who served as its Founder-Director. An Indian National Research Professor, Siddiqi made several contributions to the field of behavioural neurogenetics, particularly through his work on the genetics and neurobiology of Drosophila.
