Overview
The National Brain Research Centre (NBRC) is a research institute located in Manesar, Gurugram, India. It functions as an autonomous institute under the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, and is dedicated to research in neuroscience and the study of brain functions in health and disease using multidisciplinary approaches.
NBRC was the first autonomous institute under the Department of Biotechnology to be granted deemed-to-be-university status by the Ministry of Education (formerly the Ministry of Human Resource Development), Government of India, in May 2002. It was dedicated to the nation by the then President of India, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, in December 2003.
The founder chairman of the NBRC Society is Prof. Prakash Narain Tandon. The founder director was Prof. Vijayalakshmi Ravindranath, who was succeeded by Prof. Subrata Sinha and Prof. Neeraj Jain. Prof. Krishanu Ray serves as the current director of the institute.
NBRC is described as India's only institute dedicated solely to neuroscience research and education. Its primary objectives include understanding brain functions in healthy and diseased states, training human resources capable of conducting interdisciplinary research in neuroscience, and promoting neuroscience in India by networking with national institutions. Scientists and students at NBRC come from diverse academic backgrounds, including the biological, computational, mathematical, physical, engineering, and medical sciences.
