National Academy of Medical Sciences

The National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) is an autonomous learned society of medical professionals in India. Established to promote the growth of medical sciences in the country, the academy elects fellows and members from across the medical disciplines, organises continuing medical education programmes, and produces scholarly publications, including its journal of record.

Overview

NAMS functions as a national forum that recognises distinguished contributions in medicine and allied health sciences through the election of Fellows and Members. Activities

  • Election of Fellows and Members: Recognised medical scientists and practitioners are admitted to the fellowship (FAMS) on the basis of demonstrated contributions to medicine.
  • Continuing Medical Education (CME): NAMS conducts CME programmes, symposia, workshops and orations across India in collaboration with medical colleges and hospitals.
  • Publications: The academy publishes the Annals of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (India), a peer-reviewed scholarly journal carrying original research, reviews and orations.
  • Awards and orations: Several named orations and awards are conferred to honour eminent work in clinical medicine, surgery, basic medical sciences, and public health.

Significance

As one of the principal medical learned societies in India, NAMS plays a role in setting professional standards of recognition for medical academics, and provides a platform for inter-disciplinary scientific exchange. The post-nominal FAMS is widely cited in academic and clinical biographies in the Indian medical community.
