Nandamuri Balakrishna

Nandamuri Balakrishna, often credited as Balakrishna or Balayya, is an Indian actor, film producer and politician primarily associated with Telugu cinema. The son of the Telugu matinee idol and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. T. Rama Rao, he has appeared in over a hundred Telugu films across a career spanning more than four decades. He is also a serving Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Hindupur in Andhra Pradesh, representing the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

Background

Balakrishna was born into the Nandamuri family, one of the most prominent households in Telugu cinema and politics. His father, N. T. Rama Rao (NTR), founded the Telugu Desam Party in 1982 and served three terms as Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh. His elder brothers Nandamuri Harikrishna and Nandamuri Ramakrishna were also actors and producers, and his nephews include actors N. T. Rama Rao Jr. and Kalyan Ram. His daughter Brahmani is married to Nara Lokesh, son of TDP leader and former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

Film career

Early years

Balakrishna made his screen debut as a child artist in Tatamma Kala (1974), directed by his father. He continued to act in supporting and child roles in several NTR-led films during the 1970s before transitioning to lead roles in the early 1980s.

Lead actor

His first film as a leading man was Sahasame Jeevitham (1984). Through the 1980s and 1990s he established himself with mythological, action and family dramas, often in dual or multiple roles. Notable films from this period include Mangammagari Manavadu (1984), Muddula Mavayya, Aditya 369 (1991), directed by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao, Bobbili Simham, Bhairava Dweepam (1994) and Pedarayudu (1995).

Later career

In the 2000s and 2010s, Balakrishna featured in mass-action and historical films. Narasimha Naidu (2001), directed by B. Gopal, was a major commercial success. He played his father in the two-part biographical drama NTR: Kathanayakudu and NTR: Mahanayakudu (2019), directed by Krish Jagarlamudi. Other notable later works include Simha (2010), Legend (2014), Gautamiputra Satakarni (2017), directed by Krish, which was promoted as his 100th film, and Akhanda (2021), directed by Boyapati Srinu.

Television

Balakrishna hosts the Telugu celebrity talk show Unstoppable on Aha, the streaming platform owned by Arha Media. The show began in 2021 and has run across multiple seasons.

Political career

Balakrishna has been associated with the Telugu Desam Party founded by his father. He was elected to the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Hindupur constituency in Anantapur district in 2014, and was re-elected in 2019 and 2024. He has campaigned actively for the TDP in successive Andhra Pradesh elections.

Other roles

Balakrishna is the chairman of the Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute in Hyderabad, established in memory of his mother Basava Rama Tarakam. The hospital, set up in collaboration with Indo-American Cancer Association partners, is among the major oncology centres in Telangana. He has also produced several films through the family banner N. T. R. Arts.
