It is named in honour of Nanaji Deshmukh, the social activist and Bharat Ratna awardee associated with rural development work in central India.

NDVSU functions as the apex institution for veterinary and animal science education in Madhya Pradesh, with its headquarters located in Jabalpur. The university brings together constituent veterinary colleges in the state under a single statutory framework, providing standardised curricula in line with the norms set by the Veterinary Council of India.

Academic structure

The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in veterinary and allied sciences. Its core academic offerings include:

  • Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc. & A.H.)
  • Master's programmes in veterinary disciplines such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, microbiology, parasitology, surgery, gynaecology, medicine, public health, and animal nutrition
  • Doctoral (Ph.D.) programmes in veterinary and animal sciences
  • Programmes in fisheries science and dairy technology through associated institutions

Research and extension

NDVSU undertakes research in livestock health, animal production, reproduction, disease diagnosis, and related fields. Extension activities focus on transferring scientific knowledge to livestock owners, farmers, and rural communities through training programmes, veterinary services, and outreach by Krishi Vigyan Kendra–style initiatives in animal sciences. The university also operates teaching veterinary clinical complexes that provide diagnostic and treatment services for animals.

Significance

As the only veterinary science university in Madhya Pradesh, NDVSU plays a central role in producing veterinary professionals, supporting livestock-based livelihoods, and contributing to the dairy and animal husbandry sectors of central India. The state has a substantial bovine and small ruminant population, and the university's work supports both rural household economies and the wider livestock industry.
