Overview

Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) is a government medical institution located in Patna, the capital city of Bihar, India. It is one of the prominent state-run medical colleges in Bihar, offering undergraduate and postgraduate medical education alongside a large public hospital that serves a significant portion of the population of central Bihar. The institution draws its name from the ancient seat of learning at Nalanda, reflecting the historical and cultural identity of the region.

As a government institution, NMCH is administered under the Health Department of the Government of Bihar. It is affiliated with Aryabhatta Knowledge University, which serves as the affiliating body for medical and technical institutions across the state.

Academics

The college offers the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree as its primary undergraduate programme. Postgraduate medical education is also available across several clinical and non-clinical disciplines, leading to the Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Surgery (MS) degrees. The duration of the MBBS programme follows the standard curriculum prescribed by the National Medical Commission, which includes a period of compulsory rotating internship at the attached hospital.

The academic departments span the major branches of medicine, including general medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, ear-nose-throat (ENT), psychiatry, dermatology, radiology, anaesthesiology, and the pre-clinical and para-clinical sciences such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, and community medicine.

Hospital and Clinical Training

The hospital attached to the college functions as a major referral centre for patients from Patna and surrounding districts. Being a government facility, it provides subsidised or free medical care to a large number of patients, particularly from economically weaker sections of society. The high patient load offers medical students and postgraduate residents extensive clinical exposure across a wide range of conditions.

Clinical training is integrated into the MBBS curriculum from the second year onward, with students rotating through various departments in the hospital. The casualty and emergency services, operation theatres, labour rooms, and outpatient departments form the core sites of practical learning. The hospital also supports diagnostic services including pathology laboratories, radiology, and blood banking.

Campus and Facilities

The NMCH campus houses the college building, the hospital complex, lecture theatres, dissection halls, laboratories, a library, and residential accommodation for students, faculty, and resident doctors. The library maintains collections of standard medical textbooks, journals, and digital resources to support academic and research activities.

Hostel facilities are available separately for male and female students. The campus also includes a canteen, sports facilities, and common areas for student activities. Being a government institution, the infrastructure is maintained and periodically upgraded by the state government.

Admissions

Admission to the MBBS programme at NMCH is conducted through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG), which is the single national entrance examination for undergraduate medical admissions in India. Seats are filled through the centralised counselling process managed by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for All India Quota seats, and by the Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (BCECEB) for state quota seats.

Postgraduate admissions are similarly governed by NEET-PG scores, with state and institutional quota seats filled through the respective counselling authorities. Reservation policies follow the norms prescribed by the Government of Bihar and the Government of India.

Student Life

Student life at NMCH reflects the broader character of government medical colleges in India. Students participate in academic societies, cultural events, and sports competitions. The annual college fest and inter-college medical competitions provide platforms for students to engage beyond the classroom. Resident doctors and interns play an active role in hospital functioning, and student associations address academic and welfare concerns within the institution.
