Background

The naagin figure has long featured in Indian folklore and popular cinema, with films such as Nagin (1954), Nagin (1976) and Nagina (1986) establishing the trope on screen. Balaji Telefilms, known for shaping Indian prime-time soap opera through serials like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, adapted this mythological premise for the weekend television slot, blending family drama with visual-effects-driven fantasy.

Premise

The first season follows Shivanya, an icchadhari naagin who can take human form, as she sets out to avenge the murder of her parents, who guarded a sacred Naagmani. Disguised as a human woman, she enters the lives of those responsible for the killing while navigating a complicated romance with Ritik, a member of the very family she targets. Adaa Khan plays Shesha, a rival serpent. Subsequent seasons retain the central motif of serpent-shape-shifters and revenge, but introduce new characters, settings and arcs.

Cast

  • Mouni Roy as Shivanya / Shivangi (Season 1 and Season 2)
  • Arjun Bijlani as Ritik Singh
  • Adaa Khan as Shesha
  • Sudha Chandran as Yamini Raheja
  • Sayantani Ghosh in a recurring antagonist role

Production

The series was shot largely in and around Mumbai, with extensive use of computer-generated imagery for the serpent transformations, which became a signature element of the franchise. Balaji Telefilms positioned the show in the weekend 8 pm slot, then relatively underused by Hindi general entertainment channels for fiction, helping it stand out from weekday saas-bahu programming.

Reception and significance

Naagin debuted to strong viewership and quickly became one of the most-watched Hindi entertainment programmes on Indian television. Industry trackers reported it as the top-rated Hindi GEC show across multiple weeks of its run, and it was credited with reviving the supernatural genre on Indian prime time. Its success made the weekend fiction slot commercially viable for general entertainment channels and triggered a wave of fantasy and supernatural shows on competing networks.

The show launched Mouni Roy into mainstream stardom and consolidated Ekta Kapoor's position as a dominant producer of Hindi television. The franchise has since grown into one of the longest-running titles on Colors TV, with multiple seasons fronted by different lead actors.

Franchise

The original 2015 series spawned a multi-season franchise on Colors TV, with later instalments featuring actors such as Surbhi Jyoti, Anita Hassanand, Nia Sharma, Tejasswi Prakash, Pearl V Puri, Mohit Sehgal and Karishma Tanna in lead roles. While each season tells a self-contained story, the seasons share the central naagin mythology, the Naagmani motif and the visual style established by the first season.

Awards

The series received nominations and wins at popular Indian television award ceremonies, including the Indian Telly Awards, the Gold Awards and the Colors Golden Petal Awards, with recognition for Mouni Roy as a leading actress and for the show in fantasy/popular categories.
