Background

Before turning director, Chandra worked extensively as a film editor in the Hindi film industry, gaining technical experience that later shaped the pacing and visual style of his own productions. His early years in the industry exposed him to a wide range of directors and genres, which informed the gritty, urban realism that became a signature of his early films.

Career

Directorial debut and breakthrough

Chandra made his directorial debut with Ankush (1986), starring Nana Patekar. The film, centred on unemployed urban youth confronting moral decay and crime in their neighbourhood, was both a critical and commercial success and introduced his recurring themes of vigilante response to social rot.

Pratighaat and Tezaab

He followed up with Pratighaat (1987), a Hindi remake of the Telugu film Pratighatana, starring Sujata Mehta and Arvind Kumar, which dramatised an ordinary woman's revolt against a politician-criminal. In 1988, he directed Tezaab, starring Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit. The film was one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of the year, and its song "Ek Do Teen" became a major cultural moment, propelling Madhuri Dixit to stardom.

Narasimha and later work

In 1991, Chandra directed Narasimha, an action drama starring Sunny Deol, Dimple Kapadia and Urmila Matondkar. He subsequently directed films including Humla (1992), Wajood (1998) starring Nana Patekar and Madhuri Dixit, and Style (2001), a youth comedy that introduced actors Sharman Joshi and Sahil Khan and spawned a sequel, Xcuse Me (2003).

Marathi cinema

Chandra also produced and directed in Marathi cinema, including the film Yashwant in its various associations, and later returned with projects aimed at regional audiences, reflecting his roots in Maharashtra.

Style and themes

Chandra's films are often characterised by:

  • Urban, working-class settings, frequently in Mumbai.
  • Protagonists who turn to direct action against corruption, organised crime or political malpractice.
  • Strong, melodic film music integrated tightly with narrative beats.
  • A blend of social commentary with mainstream commercial conventions such as romance, action set-pieces and song-and-dance sequences.

Significance

N. Chandra is regarded as one of the directors who shaped the late-1980s wave of socially engaged commercial Hindi cinema, alongside contemporaries who explored similar themes of citizen frustration with institutional failure. Tezaab in particular is considered a landmark in 1980s Hindi cinema for its commercial scale, choreography, and influence on the careers of its lead actors.
