Overview

The National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination, commonly referred to as the NDA examination, is an entrance examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). It is held twice a year and serves as the route for admissions into the National Defence Academy (NDA) and the Indian Naval Academy (INA). The examination acts as a gateway for candidates seeking a career as commissioned officers in the Indian Army, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Air Force.

The NDA examination is the principal selection mechanism through which candidates are admitted to officer training at the National Defence Academy and the Indian Naval Academy. By being conducted by the UPSC, the process is part of the centralised civil examinations framework, and its outcomes feed directly into the intake of cadets at these two training establishments.

Successful candidates can pursue a career path leading to a commission in one of the three armed services. Those joining the Army, Navy, or Air Force streams undertake training at the National Defence Academy, while candidates allocated to the naval cadet entry route proceed to the Indian Naval Academy. As the examination is held twice a year, it provides two entry cycles for aspirants in each calendar year.
