Background

NALSAR is an acronym for the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research. The university was set up as part of a broader national movement, beginning with the establishment of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bangalore, to reform legal education in India by introducing five-year integrated undergraduate law programmes that combine the study of law with the social sciences and humanities.

The Chief Justice of India serves as the Visitor of the university, and the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court is associated with its governance as Chancellor, reflecting the close institutional links between the NLUs and the higher judiciary.

Campus

The university's main campus is situated at Justice City in Shameerpet, on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The campus houses academic blocks, a law library, hostels for students, faculty residences and recreational facilities, and is set within a largely residential learning environment typical of the NLU model.

Academic programmes

NALSAR offers a range of programmes in law and allied disciplines, including:

  • A five-year integrated undergraduate B.A., LL.B. (Honours) degree.
  • Master of Laws (LL.M.) programmes with various specialisations.
  • Doctoral (Ph.D.) research in law and related areas.
  • Postgraduate diploma and distance/online programmes in fields such as media law, cyber law, intellectual property, aviation law and patent law.

Admission to the integrated undergraduate and postgraduate law programmes is generally made through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), the centralised entrance examination conducted on behalf of the consortium of National Law Universities.

Research and publications

The university hosts several specialised research centres focusing on areas such as constitutional law, criminal justice, environmental law, intellectual property, tax and corporate law, and human rights. Its faculty and students contribute to academic journals and law reviews published from the campus, and the institution is regularly involved in policy research and consultations with government bodies and judicial institutions.

Significance

As one of the early National Law Universities, NALSAR has played an influential role in shaping modern legal education in India. Its alumni include practising advocates, judges, academics, civil servants, corporate counsel and policy professionals, both in India and abroad. The university is frequently ranked among the top law schools in national rankings of legal education.
