Mysskin

Overview

Mysskin (born Shanmugha Rajasekaran) is an Indian filmmaker, screenwriter, and actor who works primarily in Tamil cinema. Known for his distinctive visual style, frequent close-ups of feet and hands, dark thematic concerns, and minimalist storytelling, he is regarded as one of the prominent auteurs of contemporary Tamil cinema. His films often explore crime, morality, redemption, and the conflict between good and evil, drawing comparisons to the works of Robert Bresson and Akira Kurosawa, both of whom he has cited as influences.

Background

Mysskin adopted his screen name as a tribute to Prince Myshkin, the protagonist of Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel The Idiot. Before entering filmmaking, he reportedly spent years studying world cinema and literature, an influence that is visible in the philosophical undertones and structural choices of his work. He began his career assisting in the Tamil film industry before moving to direction.

Career

Early films

Mysskin made his directorial debut with Chithiram Pesuthadi (2006), a romantic drama that established his preference for unconventional narrative pacing. He followed it with Anjathe (2008), a police procedural drama that received critical acclaim for its taut storytelling and is widely cited as a landmark in Tamil action cinema.

Establishment as auteur

Nandalala (2010), in which he also acted in the lead role, was a road film inspired by Takeshi Kitano's Kikujiro. Yuddham Sei (2011) was a crime thriller dealing with organ trafficking, while Mugamoodi (2012) was an attempt at a superhero film, the first of its kind in Tamil cinema. Onaayum Aattukkuttiyum (2013), a single-night thriller, was widely praised for its ambition and craft.

Later works

Subsequent films include Pisaasu (2014), a horror film that became a commercial success; Thupparivaalan (2017), a detective film inspired by Sherlock Holmes; Savarakathi (2018); and Psycho (2020), a thriller starring Udhayanidhi Stalin. He has also acted in films directed by others, including Pisaasu 2 and various supporting and lead roles.

Style and themes

Mysskin's films are recognised for several recurring stylistic features:

  • Low-angle shots and frequent framing of feet, often used to convey character and emotional states.
  • Use of natural sound and minimal background score, with selective use of classical music.
  • Stories revolving around moral binaries, vigilante justice, and the wounded innocent.
  • Long, unbroken takes and slow narrative build-up culminating in intense climaxes.
  • Influence from European art cinema and Japanese filmmakers, particularly Bresson and Kurosawa.

Significance

Mysskin is considered among the few Tamil filmmakers to consistently pursue a distinct authorial voice while working within mainstream commercial structures. His work has influenced a generation of younger directors in Tamil cinema, and his thrillers are frequently cited in discussions of the genre's evolution in South Indian cinema. Films such as Anjathe and Onaayum Aattukkuttiyum are routinely included in critics' lists of significant Tamil films of the 2000s and 2010s.
