Mysore Medical College and Research Institute, widely referred to as MMC&RI, is one of the oldest and most prominent government medical institutions in the state of Karnataka. Located in the city of Mysuru, the college has historically served as a major centre for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in southern Karnataka. It is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and is regulated by the National Medical Commission of India. History and Background
The origins of Mysore Medical College trace back to the princely state of Mysore, where the Wadiyar rulers placed considerable emphasis on public health and modern education. The institution was established in the early twentieth century, making it among the earliest medical colleges in the region. Over the decades it evolved from a modest training school into a full-fledged medical college offering a broad range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and super-speciality programmes. The college was later accorded the status of a Research Institute, reflecting its expanded mandate in academic medicine and clinical investigation.
The college has been administered by the Government of Karnataka since the state's formation in 1956, and it continues to function as an autonomous institution under the Department of Medical Education, Karnataka.
Academics
MMC&RI offers the MBBS degree at the undergraduate level, which follows the curriculum prescribed by the National Medical Commission. Postgraduate programmes leading to MD, MS, and Diploma qualifications are offered across a wide range of clinical and pre-clinical disciplines including General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Anaesthesiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, and several others.
